The venerable specimen trees, designed landscapes, and works of art inspired by the natural settings of Newport, Rhode Island form an extraordinary cultural heritage. America’s Eden: Newport Landscapes Through the Ages is a first, a benchmark publication bringing Newport’s landscape history to both scholars and the general reader.

Newport’s landscape heritage is fragile and under constant threat from neglect, development, demolition, and lack of awareness. Although much of the city and its landscape retains its historic character, this remarkable legacy is further endangered by a lack of a written and visual record that coherently frames its significance. Unlike its buildings, Newport’s verdant architecture—its landscapes—remain generally undocumented. Proper stewardship will only happen when there is a definitive study to guide decision-making. Some degree of loss in the built and natural environment is inevitable, but without documentation and its dissemination through a comprehensive publication, Newport’s landscape is in peril of disappearing with every passing year. We hope this book will address this issue by informing, entertaining, and inspiring through its prose and pictures.
Foreword by Lilly Dick, Chairman, The Newport Tree Conservancy
