Dominic Garnett is hailed as 'Britain's most promising young angling writer'; (Angling Times). He caught his first canal fish, a rudd, as a small boy sitting in the beer garden of a waterside pub. He is just as keen today – although you might find the cheap fibreglass pole and pint glass of maggots replaced by anything from a match rod to specimen or even fly tackle.
Renowned for his lucid, entertaining writing, Dominic is an angling all-rounder with over 200 articles to his name in the UK and abroad, from Angling Times to Fly Fishing & Fly Tying. His aim is to put the fun and soul back into fishing, as well as to instruct. His convention-busting adventures have also featured on the Sky Sports and National Geographic TV channels, while his debut hardback Flyfishing for Coarse Fish became a bestseller.
He is also a keen photographer and in that capacity works for many magazines. He lives near Exeter.
Andy Mytton is a fanatical lure angler based in Dorset. His innovative, light tackle approach has accounted for a spectacular array of fresh and saltwater species throughout the UK and abroad, as well as TV appearances on BT and Sky Sports. On the competition and events scene he has also fished far and wide, representing England at international level and winning the Zandermasters title.
Not so very long ago, talk of catching flatfish on lures might have sounded like utter madness to the majority of anglers. How times change though, because these fish are now widely and successfully targeted using artificial baits. Flatties like dabs, flounders and plaice might have a rather innocuous appearance about them, but they are all highly predatory. All it takes to catch them is an open mind and a slightly different approach. In the course of this chapter, we’ll be outlining some startling discoveries and surprising sport to be had with the sea’s flatter residents. Much of our experience has been with the humble flounder; but similar tactics will work for a whole host of its relatives. In fact, pretty much all the flatfish are surprisingly aggressive predators, wherever you fish in the world. The flounder, our main target from the shore, remains common, perhaps in part due to their relatively low commercial value. They live in shallow, sandy and muddy areas, and particularly favour estuaries, where fresh and saltwater meet. They will travel long distances up into freshwater rivers too, often several miles, to feed on earthworms, small fish and crustaceans. This chapter will show you how to catch flatfish on simple lures, often in the unlikeliest of places.
