Beneath the Surface: Essays from the Cheshire Townships of : Lea-by-Backford, Backford, Caughall, Chorlton and Mollington: Volume Two - Softcover

The essays are arranged in a rough chronological order, starting with the finding of a Roman coin, followed by a group of family-based stories covering the period from the late 17th century. There is much more family history in this volume than in the first. Those articles have required a greater depth of research, itself being made possible by the greater knowledge and experience of our members now. We feel that, partly as a result of these articles, the second volume more closely approaches a history of the parish. However, there has been a variety of incidental history to report and the matter of Britain at war is topical and very important to include now. As factual features, we have included the catalogue for the 1937 sale of building materials from the demolition of Mollington Hall and published, for the first time, John Davies' 1953 History of Backford.
