John Burren is a tradesman from a small town community in the 1950's who finds his opportunities and the mindset of his community oppressive and limited. Seeking escape and intellectual stimulation, he becomes an active member of his local Labour party, and in turn, secures a place at a residential college for activists to study History, Politics and Economics. Undergoing a passage of rites, his studies lead him to challenge previously held beliefs and prejudices at a pivotal time in post-war history and he struggles to reconcile his background with his ambitions. Inspiration comes in the form of fellow student, Jane, who broadens his world view and confidence. This is a coming of age novel that explores a young man's quest for integrity and maturity, both politically and romantically.
After studying Politics and Economics at Ruskin College, Oxford and International Relations at the LSE, R J Fielding embarked on a career in higher education. He has lectured in International Relations at Lanchester Polytechnic (University of Coventry), and was Dean of the Faculty of Modern Studies at Trent Polytechnic. He lives in Coventry and is currently a visiting academic at Warwick University.
