Inhaltsangabe

When Léon and Solange entered the church everyone was struck by the difference in height between them. Even though he was wearing heel inserts and held himself ramrod-straight, he still only came just above her shoulder. But no one was bothered by it... However, when their first child is born, Léon gradually shrinks by fifteen inches. This is repeated after their second child and his body apart from one member continues to shrink until he is little more than a Tom Thumb driving round the family apartment in a toy car... Pascal Bruckner s novel is a delightful meditation on feminism, masculinity, marriage, parenting -and size.

Six weeks after the birth of Baptiste, Leon, putting on hise€¨corduroy jacket, the one he wore when they were going oute€¨into the country, noticed that the sleeves had stretched ande€¨came half way down his fingers while the shoulders droopede€¨more than usual.e€¨'Shit! And I had it made to measure. I'll have to take it backe€¨to the tailor.'e€¨He took another jacket out of the wardrobe — with thee€¨same result. It too seemed to have grown during the night,e€¨and the ends of the sleeves dangled down as if his arms weree€¨mere stumps. He started to laugh. What was going on? Wase€¨someone playing a joke on him? Ok then, he'd tuck up thee€¨sleeves and put on a sweater underneath to bulk out his cheste€¨and shoulders. But then when he tried his black slip-ons hise€¨feet were lost inside them and his toes didn't reach to the ende€¨any more. Furious, he stuffed some newspaper into his shoese€¨and went out with the strange feeling of having put on his bige€¨brother's clothes.e€¨Even though he'd decided to ignore the problem, hee€¨couldn't help feeling slightly disturbed. He ran throughe€¨various hypotheses, each crazier than the last: as a practicale€¨joke Solange had replaced his clothes with other, similar onese€¨which were just a little bit bigger. But why should she playe€¨a trick like that on him? She'd never made anything of here€¨superior height. She had chosen him from among all the otherse€¨according to the principle that small is beautiful. A mistress ofe€¨euphemism, she had banished words such as 'dwarf', 'midget'e€¨and 'half-pint' from her vocabulary and asked her guests toe€¨abide by that rule. She even regarded exclamations such ase€¨'You could have knocked me down with a feather!' as bade€¨form.e€¨Leon decided not to mention it to her. There would alwayse€¨be time for that. But two days later, when they were going oute€¨to see friends, there was another incident. They were standinge€¨in the lift, which had a large tinted mirror at the back, whene€¨Solange suddenly exclaimed, 'Leon, you scatterbrain, you'vee€¨forgotten to put your shoes on! Got your head in the cloudse€¨again, I suppose.'e€¨Leon quivered. Not only had he not forgotten to put hise€¨shoes on, he'd supplemented his heel inserts with two extrae€¨inches of leather sole.e€¨'Look at yourself in the mirror, you great ninny.'e€¨'I assure you I am wearing them, Solange.'
