Inhaltsangabe

This book of handy hints for the new housewife was first published in the Edwardian era, and includes recipes, medical advice, fashion tips and the dangers that can lurk in the home (e.g. the unhealthiness of carpets and the poisonous colours of wallpaper). In this new edition, the most unusual entertaining pieces of advice have been collected together along with the charming contemporary advertisement and a fascinating section about folding serviettes.

From chapter: The Nursery

When a Child has had a Blow put a little fresh butter or olive oil on to the skin immediately, and renew it every quarter of an hour for two or three hours. A piece of brown paper soaked in one-third brandy and two-thirds water applied to the part is also very useful, and as the paper dries it should be moistened again.

Children should never be allowed to drink water when they are heated, as dangerous internal chills may result from this.

Sleep.—Until children reach the age of twelve years, they should have at least ten hours’ sleep out of the twenty-four.
