When Rebecca was first published in 1938 it was an immediate popular success. Critics were less enthusiastic. 'It would be absurd to make a fuss about Rebecca,' wrote V.S. Pritchett. 'It will be here today and gone tomorrow like the rest of publicity's 'masterpieces'.' Pritchett was wrong. The novel, never out of print, has proved immensely influential.
