'In our day...' REMINISCENCES AND SONGS FROM RURAL PERTHSHIRE by MARGARET BENNETT with DORIS ROUGVIE & FRIENDS: Life in the glens and villages of Perthshire is viewed through the eyes of shepherds, farmers, crofters, estate workers, housewives, gardeners, professionals, trades-people and children. They all share reminiscences, stories, games, sayings and rhymes in Scots and Gaelic, which have been recorded for this book. Excerpts of transcriptions have been woven together by folklorist Margaret Bennett who also draws strands from written records. Perthshire singer and tradition-bearer Doris Rougvie has also illustrated the book, which concludes with a selection of Perthshire songs. Along with several friends, Doris and Margaret have recorded all the songs for a CD enclosed within the book. A Grace Notes Scotland Collection
Perthshire is the adopted home to MARGARET BENNETT who was brought up on the islands of Skye, Lewis and Shetland in a family of tradition bearers, Gaelic on her mother's side and Scots on her father's. She is a folklorist, singer, writer, and part-time lecturer on the Scottish Music degree at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. She 'wears her scholarship lightly', whether at home with her 'Ochtertyre Song Weekends', or at an international festival in North America. In handing on tradition, she inbues an infectious enthusiasm into her workshops, teaching songs in an enriched cultural context. A recipient of several previous awards, in 2010 she received an Honorary Doctor of Music from the RSAMD in recognition of her contribution to Scottish tradition. Author of several books, including Scottish Customs from the Cradle to the Grave, (2004) and her book with Doris (cited below), Margaret also sings on CD collaborations with her late son, Martyn-Glen Lyon is set in the heart of Perthshire. She is Patron of the Traditional Music and Song Association and of 'Crofting Connections' (a Scottish Curriculum for Excellence project).
