After serving in the British Army, he went to Vietnam where he endured the horror of mortar attacks and witnessed widespread death and depravity. The slaughter of his closest friend, a US marine, made him think deeply about loss for the first time; he came home plagued by recurring nightmares and battling to understand how he d become so immune to killing. Alcoholic and suffering from severe post traumatic stress, he took up the brutal martial art American Kenpo immortalised by Elvis Presley and, through that, found a way of reconnecting with the Northern Cheyenne s spirituality. In 2000, he became the first and only man in the UK and Europe to reach its highest attainable level 10th degree Grand Master opening schools across England.
