'An inspiring story of vision, entrepreneurship and adventure. In a country that many would write off as a basket case, Clarke shifts paradigms and pushes boundaries, investing in the lives of the disadvantaged and war-ravaged, restoring dignity and bringing hope. In a combination of resourcefulness and what he describes, paradoxically, as commonsense decisions , Clarke turns a dream into reality in the field of healthcare in his adoptive home, Uganda, A must-read.' Judge Julia Sebutinde - International Judge on the war-crimes Special Court for Sierra Leone, at The Hague, Netherlands.
Dr. Ian Clarke was born in Ireland where he trained as a General Medical Practitioner. He moved to Uganda in the late 1980's to set up a rural community hospital, north of Kampala, Uganda's capital city. After starting that rural hospital, now known as Kiwoko Hospital, Dr. Clarke decided to start a private upscale hospital in the heart of Kampala to cater to the emerging middle class in the city. His objective was to use the income from the private hospital to upgrade the services both at the private hospital and at the community hospital, thus positively impacting health services in the country. The private hospital called, International Hospital Kampala (IHK), opened in 1996 and provides specialist services in the city. Dr. Clarke also writes a weekly column in The New Vision, Uganda's biggest daily, and has further projects in Juba - South Sudan and in Zanzibar - Tanzania. He is married to Roberts, and they have three children, Sean, Michela and Lauren.
