David Wright started telling Dicky-Duck stories to his two young children at bedtime, and realised that by far the most successful were those which made them laugh. Encouraged by their enthusiasm, he began to write down the best ones and illustrate them as a hobby. When David's wife read the books to children at the schools where she was teaching, they were so popular she even had boys asking to stay in at playtime to do comprehension exercises on Dicky-Duck! Constant demand from children who wanted to buy the books convinced David to give up his job as an accountant and produce the books full time. David works from his home in rural Somerset, which he shares with his wife and children, a dog, two cats and a pondful of wild mallard ducks!

If anyone ever tells you that bringing up a baby duck is easy - don't believe them! For a start, baby ducks poo a lot, which is not only messy but smelly too. Dicky-Duck was no exception, and the only thing he would do in his potty was swim in it! Sue had a brilliant idea, and made him a nappy out of kitchen roll and sellotape. After Dicky-Duck had eaten three of them, it became clear that he would have to stay outside until he was house trained.
