Writing in everyday language, using examples from everyday life, this book examines political events to create an interlocking and comprehensive assessment of what Anarchism is and how we might get there. It's a mixture of moral and practical argument that, despite its pedantic style at times, and some archaic language, has not been surpassed. It was the first attempt of an Anarchist to present his ideas in a thorough and cohesive way, ideas distilled from nearly forty years of activism. Berkman examines how change comes about - and, just as importantly for him, why it doesn't. Perhaps in a book filled with thoughtful and contentious points, the most salient discussion is why people continue to accept capitalism and all its institutions that oppress and repress individual freedom. For Berkman, human evolution was instinctively predicated on mutual aid and justice was a kind of instinctive sympathy that can only be hindered or corrupted by government. We start from there.

Softcover. Zustand: Very Good. 237, [13[pp, in light card, illustrated covers. 8vo. Very gentle edge wear to card covers else neat, clean, bright and tight throughout. Writing in everyday language and drawing examples from everyday life, Berkman examines political events to create an interlocking and comprehensive account of what Anarchism is and how one might get there. Berkman was a leading writer and participant in the 20th century Anarchist movement. Young and idealistic, he practiced 'propaganda by the deed", attempting to assassinate Henry Clay Frick during the Homestead Steel Strike of 1892. While in prison, he wrote the classic tale of prison life, Prison Memoirs of an Anarchist. Deported from the USA back to his native Russia in 1919, he witnessed first-hand the failure of the Bolshevik revolution and dedicated himself to writing this classic primer on Anarchism. This edition combines the frequently reprinted ABC of Anarchism and the less easy to find What is Communism back into a single book format. Artikel-Nr. 036165

paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Most of our very good books have only minor imperfections such as shelf wear consistent with a new book that's sat on a bookshop shelf for a year or two. Occasionally we may miss other minor imperfections as we have to grade books at speed. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check).
