Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother was a keen collector of modern British pictures. This newly researched account of the watercolours and drawings in her collection reveals the wide range of Queen Elizabeth's interests and her enthusiastic support for contemporary British artists from the 1930s onwards.
In her introduction Susan Owens investigates Queen Elizabeth's approach to collecting and her involvement with the arts during the Second World War. Archive photographs set the scene, and many private letters written to Queen Elizabeth by her friends Kenneth Clark, Jasper Ridley and Osbert Sitwell, and by artists such as Rex Whistler, Augustus John and Edward Seago, are quoted for the first time.
The drawings and watercolours illustrated here evocatively record some of the key events of the twentieth century: the coronation in 1937, bomb-damaged buildings during the Second World War, VE day in 1945 and the funeral of King George VI in 1952. A more intimate view of Queen Elizabeth's collection is provided by portraits and by watercolours of her homes, including Windsor Castle, Royal Lodge and Clarence House.
