Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Born in New Cumnock, Ayrshire, in 1926, Alexander Cameron moved to the Maybole region of Ayrshire when his father, a railway stationmaster, received promotion. His great love of animals led him to take up a career as a vet, first in his home area, later at Ilfracombe in Devon, but eventually he responded to another and stronger call. After ten years as a vet, and having become senior partner in the practice, he returned to Glasgow to train for the ministry. His first charge was in his native Ayrshire, after which he moved to one of Scotland's largest churches, in Nairnshire; when he first published an account of those days, as 'Vet in the Vestry', it became an immediate success, selling world-wide and in many editions. Public demand was such that he produced his second volume, 'Poultry in the Pulpit'. Meantime, for health reasons, Alec Cameron moved again, this time to minister to four scattered rural charges in the Borders; but the peaceful idyll was shattered when the Lockerbie disaster and its aftermath brought his parish into greater prominence. Now retired with his wife to their beloved Nairn, Alexander Cameron confesses to express both surprise and gratification at the enduring success that his writing has enjoyed. 'Alexander Cameron' is the pen-name of Rev. Alexander Cameron Gibson.

Aus dem Klappentext

'Vet in the Vestry': This splendid and inspiring book will enchant you. The author was senior partner in a successful veterinary practice in Devon when, in the late fifties, he found himself drawn to the ministry. So compelling was the calling that, almost reluctantly, he responded and, after interview, was accepted for training by the Church of Scotland. His former vocation was to stand him in good stead, and in this, his first book, Alexander Cameron gives a delightful account of the contrasts and similarities between his two lives. In a zestful celebration of life, the author's warm and anecdotal style introduces a host of characters and incidents; they enriched his career and remind us of the way things were, when farming was a way of life and when the animals were part of that life.

Sometimes hilarious, sometimes tragic, this wonderful book was first published in 1987 and became an instant success, selling worldwide and in many editions. 'Poultry in the Pulpit': As soon as 'Vet in the Vestry' was first published, requests for a sequel came flooding in. In his second book, Alexander Cameron continues his engaging, always entertaining (but never sentimental) biography of life as a minister, both in his native Ayrshire and in Nairnshire. The same inimitable style, rich in anecdote, perfectly reflects the reality of life in a rural community; no wonder that the author's 'farmyard manner' and uncompromisingly honest and straightforward approach to life's problems were to make him one of Scotland's most popular ministers.
