It's the Fifties, and every weekday all of Britain likes to tune in to its favourite BBC radio serial, The Parkers.
No wonder a young man at a loose end, and frustrated by his rejection for National Service, gravitates towards the makers of the programme - to its founder, the enigmatic Verity Orchard, her ambivalent husband Charles, and Cassie, daughter of 'Elizabeth Parker' herself. They all make claims on him - claims that will pursue him down the years into late middle age.
And then there's his cousin, Ian.
Paul Binding lives in Shropshire. Related to a former scriptwriter of Mrs Dale's Diary he has remained fascinated by all forms of soap-opera. He is the author of fiction and literary criticism, and his memoir of his early childhood in Germany won the J.R.Ackerley Prize in 1991. He reviews books regularly, for the Times Literary Supplement, The Independent on Sunday, The Guardian and the Observer amongst others, and has a particular interest in cultural activities in Scandinavia and the Low Countries. He enjoys the company of animals and exploring the countryside near his home. His study of the first atlas-makers, IMAGINED CORNERS is being published in autumn 2002.
