This story of a Glasgow boyhood is set in Braeside Street off Maryhill Road - an area poor, yet proud and undeniably "respectable". War service whisks Roderick Wilkinson away from Braeside Street, from the engineering works and his first job as an office boy, and from the advertising agency that followed it, away too from the dance hall jazz band that so dominated his spare time.
