Birgitta, a young woman living in a repressed family with Scandinavian roots, wants to begin a business with her fiancé. Her grandmother, a religious fanatic, opposes her, on the pretext that her grandfather (helpless after a stroke) wants his money used for training her as a missionary. After a quarrel, Birgitta leaves in anger, and is hurt in a car crash. Her grandfather is the only person who can save her life, by agreeing to a kidney donation. The grandmother’s bitter opposition is overruled, but her husband dies during the surgery. His death brings to light details of a long-buried crime explaining why Birgitta’s father left on her ninth birthday. The grandmother accidentally killed him for his irreligious nature and persuaded her husband to help her conceal the crime, causing the stroke that has left him helpless ever since.
