Stephen Bett s last three books (High-Maintenance, Nota Bene, and, here, Three Women) have moved from his customary scathing satirizations of so-called "pop" culture, to a deeply anguished book about a difficult love realtionship to, now, a book of anger, bitterness, and new beginnings. Still, what remains constant is a sassy, self-deprecating, edgy humour, and, above all, a true poet s ear for his craft -- for the word, the line, the stanza. The shape of the poem itself and the concern to make it, as Zukofsky famously argued for, "Upper case music."
