It presents 17 elements of short story writing with detailed and explicit explanations and directions. It also has these exercises written by high school students. It shows students how to write short stories and how to submit them to publishers. These are very sophisticated exercises and should be attempted only by serious young writers. Each of the exercises in this level has, in the index, a student's paper based on it just as it was handed in to the teacher. There is an 18th exercise that asks students to use the 17 skills in the writing of a short story.
