Chapter 1: Introduction

The Time of Your Life Today, more than ever before, "aging" is an opportunity, not a problem. Americans in general are living longer, healthier, more active lives. As you reach this plateau, you have the chance to pursue your happiness... without the responsibility or demands of work and family. And you have the energy and resources to achieve personal goals of travel, hobbies, education.

Have you prepared yourself for this new opportunity? This book is designed to help you look clearly and positively at the changes and decisions of retirement. From Financial Planning to Health to Family Matters, or a new job, full or part-time, we address clearly and directly the financial, physical and emotional concerns you may have had about retirement.

An Aging Nation The first thing to know about "aging" in America is that "everybody's doing it." The first of the 76 million Baby Boomers turned 50 in 1996. Between now and 2030, the aged will become a dominant segment of America's population.

People are living longer than ever before. In 1900, average life expectancy was 50 years. In 1960, the average 65-year-old American could expect to live another 18 years. In 1995, this average rose to 17.4 years beyond age 65. Today, the average length of retirement beyond 65 is 15.8 years for men, 20.2 years for women.

Better health care, nutrition awareness, shorter work weeks, higher standard of living, earlier retirement... all have contributed to longer, more vibrant lives, affirming Browning's lines, "Come grow old with me, the best is yet to come."

Sooner or Later You may be reading this book and saying "I will not be retiring for sometime in the future." Think again. With downsizing, early retirement programs, buyouts, more and more of us are facing a choice sooner than anticipated.

Much of the information covered in Ready or Not is relevant at all ages and stages at work... and, as the title suggests, is intended to make you aware of the need to start planning for your future today.
