R. David Bermudez-Onopa is a professional engineer with a Bachelor in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and a Master in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is currently President of Onopa Management Corporation. In this book, he introduces the FOAM hybrid model to lead organizations in modern times. By representing a company as a ship, FOAM combines traditional functional areas with modern management science to present a visual perspective of human capital with in organizations. Over the last several years, businesses have been transforming traditional management practices to capitalize not only on the left brain's rational capacity, but also the right brain's tremendous imaginative power. The old notion that "strictly business" is mostly inhumane is slowly fading away. Innovation and synergy do not live in a three-dimensional mechanical world.

In this book we bring together some ten years of work, study, research and soul-jolting experiences to build a human organizational model that follows the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle. We present a model that boils a business setting down to a simple form so that if we need to complicate things at least we can start from the same point; this can be a victory in itself.

Our model was largely inspired by the latest research in the realm of emotional intelligence. Studies have shown that a person's ability to understand and control emotions under different personal and work-related pressure situations is just as important as rational intelligence in determining one's probability of success. The same applies to leadership and organizations.

To bring the model to life and make it as practical as possible, we introduce real life work practices gathered from studies and interviews in American and Hispanic corporations, both large and small. These examples depict our model's universality; simply because the model focuses on the human being within an organization. Whether American, Hispanic, European, Asian or Russian, the human heart is basically the same wherever you go-it feels and it wants to be felt.

If we look at the world around us, we see that simple can be powerful. The mighty oceans cover 75% of our planet and are essential for life; yet water is basically hydrogen and oxygen. The sun's fury is also essential for life; yet the sun is primarily helium. Computers are revolutionizing mankind as we live the information age; yet digital information is composed of ones and zeroes at the bit level. Simple is beautiful!
