Shan, a member of the Tai family of languages, refers to those languages spoken in the Shan States of Myanmar (Burma), the Yunan Province in China, and the northern provinces of Mae Hong Son and Chiengrai in Thailand. Dr. Josiah Cushing, a missionary who worked in the Shan States in the 19th century, used Burman Shan as the basis of the colloquial Shan language for his 1881 Shan-English dictionary. The dictionary has been through many revision since. This edited version of Cushing's 1914 volume employs the Shan script developed in the mid- 20th century. It is written for scholars and students with little or no background in Shan who are involved in phonological, lexical, comparative, and historical research related to Shan. Annotation c.
