"The brief text and droll ink and watercolor illustrations... [work] together brilliantly to bring out the considerable situational humor. Quirkier and much smaller in scope than classics such as Remy Charlip's Fortunately and Margery Cuyler's That's Good! That's Bad! -- but just as entrancing." --starred, The Horn Book Magazine
--Journal"In this simply written picture book, Pom and Pim enjoy the ups and downs of a day together. Pom, a young child, is inseparable from Pim, an unidentifiable stuffed animal with an egg-shaped body, two eyes, and four legs. Pom trips over a rock ('Bad luck') and finds money ('What luck!'). After buying ice cream, Pom eats it quickly, gets a stomachache ('Bad luck'), lies down, and sees a balloon ('What luck!'). After it pops ('Bad luck'), Pom cleverly makes it into a raincoat for Pim ('What luck!'). Similar in concept to Remy Charlip's classic picture book Fortunately (1964), this pared-down story is accessible even to toddlers. Expressive ink drawings with delicate color washes illustrate the brief text with warmth and humor. The Landstroms are a Swedish author-illustrator couple, best known in North America for their amusing picture books in the Will series and the Boo and Baa series. Their latest book will engage younger children with its simple, playful story." --Booklist Online
--Website"Young Pom and his potato-shaped rag doll, Pim, make their way through the ups and downs of everyday life.
The Landstroms' Pom, who bears a striking resemblance to a 3-year-old Winston Churchill, ventures out into the world with his comrade, Pim. 'It's warm. The sun is shining. What luck!' But wait--there is a stone in the path that Pom doesn't see. He trips, planting his nose in the ground. 'Ouch! / Bad luck.' But wait--when he gets to his feet, he discovers a 20-krona note stuck to his nose. 'What luck!' (Though Swedish, the bill's nature and use are instantly apparent.) He buys some ice cream, generously mashing some into Pim's face, and they both get a bellyache. So it goes. Home in bed, where he is giving his stomach a rest, he finds a balloon, which pops, but a big shard of the balloon turns into a handy poncho for Pim, and they go stand in a puddle in the rain. 'What luck!' The question here is what's not to like about these two characters? They weather the storms of misfortune and revel in fortune's smiles. The words snugly fit the capacities of an emergent reader, but they hold a delicious sense of portent. The artwork is expressive while radiating the secure texture of a woodblock print, the colors muted, and each page is inviting, despite the vicissitudes.
A perfect primer for the existential philosophy required for a small one to make it through the day." --starred, Kirkus Reviews
--Journal"This short and sweet tale is actually a version of the old 'fortunately... unfortunately' setup, which has seen recent iterations in books like Jeff Mack's Good News, Bad News and Michael Foreman's Fortunately, Unfortunately. Pom is enveloped in a nubbly sweater, and his friend Pim is a soft toy with dangly legs and arms. As the two head out for a walk, the Landströms let the pictures tell most of the story. 'It's warm. The sun is shining. What luck!' A rock lies in Pom's path, and a piece of paper lies just beyond it. A page turn reveals the inevitable: Pom trips over the rock: 'Ouch! Bad luck.' But there's a face and a number on the piece of paper: 'Money! What luck!' Good and bad luck follow in turn with one or two words per spread on the small, creamy pages. As simple as Olof Landström's drawings are, Pom is a believable and engaging child (especially when he gives Pim a taste of his ice cream cone by shoving it lovingly into his face), and the tale unfolds at a brisk clip." --Publishers Weekly
--JournalWhile Pom plays with his toy Pim, he falls, finds money, gets a tummy ache, and uses a popped balloon to make his best friend Pim a raincoat.
