Munias are widespread throughout the Old World's tropical regions. In their natural habitat, they are birds of the savanna, but they have adapted to a number of different habitats, including areas inhabited by humans. They range in size from the Java sparrow (which is about the size of a common starling) to the diminutive Madagascar mannikin. Their striking plumage makes them popular as cagebirds and they breed readily in captivity.
This book covers 43 species of munias and mannikins. The author has recently described one new species and ten new subspecies to science."

Robin Restall (1937–2023) was an author and illustrator. Originally a draughtsman, Robin's development as an ornithology artist began with his love of cagebirds, which led to his first book, Munias and Mannikins (1996). He became a Research Associate at the Phelp Ornithological Collection in Caracas, Venezuela, where he conceived and painted the art for his masterpiece, the two-volume Birds of Northern South America, which featured his illustrations of 2,300 species. Published in 2006, this book remains a magnificent testament to Robin's powers of observation and illustration. It went on to provide the basis for several other field guides, notably to Ecuador and Venezuela, both of which remain the standard works.

Cloth. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Slightly worn. First Edition. Well illustrated, large octavo, pp 264, a tiny blemish to the fore-edge, otherwise extremely clean internally, red cloth in very good condition, a small blank label on the rear endpaper, the dustwrapper is not price-clipped but it is just slightly used. [Munias and mannikins (the names are interchangeable) comprise a single genus of 41 species of seed-eating passerines inhabiting the tropical and subtropical regions of the Old World. The author has been studying munias and mannikins for many years, both in the field and in his own aviaries. His extensive travels have enabled him to see most of the species in the wild and in addition he has kept many of them in captivity, giving him a unique opportunity to study them at close quarters. The book is illustrated with 16 color plates of perched birds in field guide style depicting every known plumage, plus a unique set of 64 plates of colored 'measured drawings' of individual birds to show plumage variation. There are also numerous line drawings, most of which show behavior never before illustrated or described. The result of this original research is a comprehensive monograph covering every species and subspecies in breathtaking detail.]. Artikel-Nr. 018935
