The playwright Christopher Fry received hundreds of moving and witty letters from his wife in 1940-45 while separated from her by war service. This selection of letters from the last three of those years gives a highly entertaining picture of civilian life in a rural Oxfordshire community during the war. When the war was over and Fry went to direct a play at the Theatre Royal, Bristol, a gift of money from his second cousin John Fry brought him an appreciative telegram: "Wonderful present from John makes me even more attached to you send housekeeping cheque as dissipation at village fete causes wife and child to starve in street bless you Phyl."
