Calderas are volcanic depressions formed as near-surface crust subsides into magma reservoirs during eruptions. In this work, the editors (of the Instituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia-Osservatorio Vesuviano, Italy and the Benfield Hazard Rearch Center, U. College London, UK) present 11 papers that combine case studies and theoretical modeling to address features of caldera formation and behavior that remain less that fully understood. The most significant issues addressed include the conditions that are necessary to produce and release the large volumes of magma erupted during caldera formation, the evolution of magmatic feeding systems before and after caldera formation, the processes that limit the behavior of precursors to eruptions before caldera formation and during post-collapse unrest, whether pre-eruptive precursors can be distinguished from those driving unrest without an eruption, and optimum procedures for designing hazard maps and mitigation strategies.
