Lizzie Speller read Archaeology and Classics at Cambridge, followed by a postgraduate degree in Ancient History. She is a poet and journalist, and has written for the Observer, Big Issue, Independent on Sunday and Woman's Journal, and also appeared on Radio 4. Her first book was Following Hadrian: A Second Century Journey through the Roman Empire(2002, Headline, UK and OUP, USA). She lives in Gloucestershire.
