The papers in this volume were presented at a two-day workshop on grain boundaries held at the University of Birmingham to mark both the opening of the new University Centre for Electron Microscopy and the 70th birthday of Professor R E Smallman. The workshop demonstrated the wide-ranging importance of grain boundaries and interfaces in a variety of materials including structural metals and ceramics, magnetic and electronic materials.
