Spike Milligan is one of Britain's best-loved comedians. Maxine Ventham, a friend who often experiences Spike's affectionate nature first-hand, was chatting with Spike's wife one day about what it is that makes so many people fall under Spike's spell. She then came up with the idea of creating a 'living biography' of Spike. Spike agreed that this was an excellent idea and gave her permission to contact his friends and acquaintances for their thoughts about him and recollections of their times together. Maxine Ventham first met Spike Milligan many years ago when she organised a convention at which he was a special guest. She was suffering from a particularly bad bout of depression at the time and this, combined with her love of comedy, meant that she and Spike had a lot in common, so a friendship developed. Since then, she has been to stay with Spike and his wife many times and they have shown her tremendous kindness and affection.
