Their remarkable friendship, which is examined in this volume, endured intense national rivalry which would change the face of Europe and the world, and end in world war. The author sets out to illustrate major themes of the relationship between Bismarck and Russell: the Franco-Prussian war; Turkey as "the sick man of Europe", and the Eastern Question; relations with France, Russia and other European powers; the beginnings of imperial rivalry; and the clash of ideologies between liberal Anglo-Saxon beliefs and the militarism of the new Germany. Emerging from the text is a picture of the German Imperial court and of British political society at its highest.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Karina Urbach is both an historian and prize-winning novelist.
She took her PhD at the University of Cambridge and since 2015 researches 20th Century History at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton and the Institute for Historical Research, University of London.
Bismarck’s favourite Englishman was Urbach’s first book and is now out in paperback.
In 2015 her monograph Go-Betweens for Hitler triggered a campaign for the release of interwar material from the royal archives. Her latest work The Book of Alice (Das Buch Alice, Berlin 2020) illustrates for the first time how German publishing houses turned Jewish non-fiction books into ‘aryan’ ones.
Urbach worked on several documentaries for the BBC, Channel 4, ITV and in the US – for PBS and has written for several newspapers
