Originally published in 1982, this re-written edition begins with a brief review of the historical development of artillery, emphasizing the interdependence between doctrine and technology which is still a fundamental factor in weapons design. The indirect fire system is then examined in order to demonstrate the need for a systems approach to current and future developments. The three types of weapons launchers - guns, mortars and rockets - and their associated munitions are then compared in terms of their general characteristics, after which each platform is considered in detail. The final chapter looks to the future, to developments which are likely to be seen over the next 10 and possibly 20 years.
