He has, however, been neglected in the late twentieth century. Signorelli was born in Cortona in southern Tuscany. His father and grandfather seem to have been painters, but Signorelli's most important early training was received in the workshop of Piero della Francesca (c.1415/20-1492) in the mid-1460s.
