The expression 'our own language' illustrates the significance of the Irish language for many among the nationalist community in Northern Ireland. They regard the neglect of the language by unionist administrations since the 1920s as another part of the attempted anglicisation of Ireland, and part of the justification for their continued opposition to the union. As a result, Irish has come to be seen as a symbol of resistance, anti-Britishness, liberation and nationalism. The troubles have heightened the awareness of national and cultural identities in Northern Ireland and, thus, the Irish language has served to exacerbate the already tense situation that exists between the two communities there. The language has been labeled a 'green litmus test' so that the political situation is reflected in attitudes towards the language, and, in turn, the revival movement seems to mirror what is happening in the political and social arenas.
This book examines the symbolic significance of Irish by discussing the language's history, its relationship to identity, the connection with nationalism and republicanism, the repercussions in the unionist community and, finally, its future under the Good Friday Agreement.
