This account traces each stage of the critical struggle between the Persian Empire and the early Greek states, from the first clashes to the miraculous return home of 10,000 Greek mercenaries stranded in the heart of Persia. Carefully examined sources and placing events within their geographical and historical contexts, the author attempts to define cultural and political differences between the two peoples. His balanced, questioning approach places fresh emphasis on the Persian perspective and will provide an accessible and informed introduction to the period.

Original brochure. Zustand: Sehr gut. Classical World Series. 101 p., w/ maps and pictures. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - In perfect condition. - Content: As little as fifty years ago the encounter of the Greeks and Persians could have been described - without too much fear of contradiction - as a meeting of long lost cousins. For about two centuries it has been realised that all the languages known as Indo-European must have originated from a common source. This source was a language which was never written, and has therefore been irretrievably lost, but which can be partly reconstructed by ingenious linguistic detective work. The reconstructed language has been named 'Proto-Indo-European', and it represents, as far as is possible with present scholarly knowledge and techniques, the ancestor of most of the languages spoken today in Europe, Iran, Afghanistan, north India, and in parts of Central Asia. The same sort of detective work enabled scholars to guess certain things about the lives led by these speakers of 'Proto-Indo-European'. It appears that they knew how to work copper, practised some sort of agriculture, had domesticated cows and sheep, and worshipped a sky god - a father-figure who ruled in heaven just as, on earth, fathers ruled their sons, grandsons, and dependent womenfolk in their own tribal society.
