This detailed scheme of work aims to help teachers to plan and implement the Literacy Hour. It includes guidance on breaking down the reception Learning Objectives from the National literacy framework into small steps and suggestions for books, materials and suitable IT resources. The text also includes: age-appropriate activities and resources for pupils with severe, profound and complex needs who will work from the earliest learning objectives for much of their education; support for teachers in developing targets for individual education plans; and a foundation for delivering the Literacy Hour on which teachers can build, which can easily be extended to incorporate a programme for older pupils both in Key Stages 3 and 4 and at post-16.
