This is an interactive exploration of how current secondary school management procedures and recent education policy changes have shaped head teachers' perceptions of their mission and vocation. Eight heads - representing a broad spectrum of schools - offer their views. Transcripts of the interviews formed the main input for a day's conference, at which well-known commentators discussed the implications of this "testimony" against the backdrop of education and politics in the mid-to late-1990s. A transcript of the conference was summarized and each headteacher received a resumee and questions for further discussion, as the basis for a second series of interviews, enabling them to respond on specific points and to challenge the analysis and conclusions of the commentators. Meanwhile, each of the commentators wrote an essay about one of the major themes that arose at their conference. These raw materials have been edited into a set of perspectives on state secondary education today, mirroring the range and variety of what is being achieved in a climate apparently controlled to bring about a high degree of standardization and conformity.
