The collapse of state socialism in East Germany and the subsequent unification of Germany in 1989 dismembered GDR society and extended West German economic, political and social institutions and practices to the East. A predictable social order was replaced by uncertainties and unprecedented changes, and while a western-style mobilization of incomes and opportunities emerged for some, social exclusion and poverty have been the experience of others.
Written by researchers from Leipzig and Britain, this book draws on hitherto unpublished empirical data, interviews and case studies to examine the transformation of everyday life in post-unification East Germany, with special reference to Leipzig. It charts economic, political and social changes in the East since 1989 and shows how people have perceived and are coping with such changed circumstances as employment, housing, political participation and general life style.
