Pop Art had its genesis independently in Great Britain and the United States in the 1950s as an attempt to bridge the gap between art and everyday reality. In Britain, the Independent Group staged a seminal exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1956 which came to stand as a summary of the agenda of the Pop Art movement. Featuring all the cliches of consumerism from advertisements for sexy underwear to comic strips, Pop Art fixed many of the icons of modern life in the popular imagination.
With influences from Dadaism and Surrealism, artists such as Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns gave form to the ideas of Pop Art while Andy Warhol and his work came to be regarded as its incarnation. In seeking to span the divide between art and the real world Pop Art has often posed more questions than it has answered.
This beautifully printed book is especially designed so that all forty prints in it may be simply removed for framing. Alternatively, it may be kept intact as an invaluable reference source.
