This text is the second of two volumes which contain the findings of a comparative analysis of the structure and impact of some of the main study abroad programmes offered by universities in four European countries (UK, France, Federal Republic of Germany and Sweden) and in the USA. The project was co-ordinated by the European Institute of Education and Social Policy in Paris and was carried out by an international research team. The study, launched in the mid-1980s, provides a comprehensive international analysis of study abroad programmes in terms of geographical coverage, the number of institutions and programmes analyzed and the numbers of students and graduates involved. It includes a survey of the institutions running the programmes, a before/after survey of students and a survey of several hundred graduates designed to assess the impact of study abroad on employment possibilities and career patterns. In addition to the employment aspect, the authors address the effects of study abroad on the students' foreign language competence, their academic performance and learning strategies, and their knowledge and perceptions of their chosen host and their home countries.
