This edited volume is the result of a joint venture by the Tourism Research Group and the Western European Studies Centre at the University of Exeter. It brought together the work of the Tourism Research Group on the role of tourism in economic development and the broader international interests of the Western European Studies Centre at a time of growing interest in tourism. Expansion of, and the creation of new forms of, tourism - even at a time of global economic recession - has led to considerable interest in the industry. Furthermore, in recent years, there has been a spate of tourism policy formulation at the local, regional, national and - somewhat hesitantly - the international level. It therefore seemed timely to undertake a broad review in order to identify the main outlines of the Western Eurpoean experience of tourism. This work has concentrated on the national and regional development of tourism and on the implications of tourism development for national anbd regional economies. The underlying aim was to identify those elements which were common to the experiences of all or most countries and those which were unique in some way. As such, the volume does not seek to provide a comprehensive view of all aspects of tourism and economic development. It also does not provide comprehensive coverage of all Western European States.
