The "Starting Science" series is designed to make science themes come alive through a combination of photographs with commentary for discussion, activities and investigations in which the children are involved and background information further linking pictures and activities into each chapter's topic. Each book in the series provides an introduction to science enquiry methods. In using them the teacher will find that they are teaching the other core subjects of language and maths. Through the activities and investigations, the children use a variety of ways to explore the world around them and to record their discoveries. The activities and investigations are closely related to children's early experiences and can be used flexibly, depending on their ability. They are designed to be easily accessible to parents or teachers. This book involves children in an investigation of natural and man-made waste and pollution, where it comes from, what happens to it and how it affects both humans and animals as well as the environment. It is hoped that children will learn to care for the world around them and be encouraged towards a general scientific approach.

Kay Davies and Wendy Oldfied are both experienced primary teachers. They have written many books for children, and have been scriptwriters for BBC Schools Radio.
