However the possibility that manmade fibres could be synthesized was overlooked until three centuries ago when Hooke in his "Micrographia" suggested that artificial substances that could be wire drawn could be utilized. A useful filament was not produced until the last part of the 19th century, when Swann and de Chardonnet extruded a solution of cellulose nitrate (collodion) through small holes (spinnerets). These pioneer manmade fibres were replaced by rayon fibres which were spun from an alkaline cellulose xanthate solution (viscose), which were in turn supplemented by cellulose acetate and many synthetic fibres. This volume represents the proceedings of a symposium organized by the American Chemical Society on the history of manmade fibres at its annual meeting in 1991, and contains chapters on a wide range of fibres both from an historical perspective and with a view to outlining new materials and novel uses. It includes topics as varied as the use of acrylic resins for the conservation of antiquities, the uses of cellulose graft copolymers, and the history of viscose rayon. " (Publisher). Artikel-Nr.
