The technicalities of trading with the Chinese are followed in detail through a voyage, shipwreck and subsequent trading in Canton in 1819/20 by Captain Benjamin Shreve of Salem, Massachusetts (though it could equally have been by a captain of any of the other nationalities), while details of life and objects bought in China are depicted throughout the book.
This work, which completely supersedes the earlier work of the same title by the author, includes many new discoveries and attributions, as well as a wealth of additional information. With 325 black and white and 136 colour plates, it is the definitive source book and essential reference on the decorative arts of the China trade.

Zustand: Gut. First Imprint. Erstausgabe. 462 (2) Seiten mit vielen Abbildungen. Aus der Bibliothek der Gräfin Ledebur. Guter Zustand. Einband leicht fleckig. Minimaler Feuchtigkeitsschaden. From the late 1700s, an increasing number of British, American and continental European sailing ships brought back ship loads of exotic objects which found a ready market in America and Europe. The insatiable interest in the Orient resulted in a large range of painters depicting everyday life in China, as well as portraits of both Chinese and Westerners. Among other objects brought back were furniture, silver, silk embroideries, lacquerware, clay figures, fans and wallpaper. New research has resulted in a detailed study in which wrong attributions are corrected and, in some areas, such as furniture, our knowledge revolutionised. This is a fascinating account of Chinese artists and craftsmen and their techniques, and of the way of life encountered by Westerners in this most mysterious of trading countries. An admirable introduction which is both detailed and scholarly - World of Interiors Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 2293 28 x 22 cm.
