This Bitter Land takes up where The Last Coachman leaves off, and takes the reader to the heart of the Irish stand against British rule against the backdrop of the First World War. Michael Quinlan lies buried in a paupers grave in Carlisle, after suffering from a heart attack, and life for his family will never be the same again. James, his son has had to go into hiding after he witnessed the attempted destruction of the munitions factory in Gretna where he and his father were working. This novel charts the fortunes of several Irish families, and how their lives became embroiled in the bitter struggle to give Ireland a voice, sometimes at a terrible price. It is hoped that this is not the last book about the Quinlan family or their friends as readers will want to know what happens next in the struggle and what is in store for other members of the family.
Biografía del autor
John Michael Doyle (BA Hons. IEng, MIED) The author was born in Beaufort Co. Kerry, the son of an Irish father and English mother and lived there until moving to England at the age of 17. He worked in the engineering industry, mainly in aerospace, and served three years in the British Army. In 1988, the author graduated from the Open University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and achieved BA (Honours) three years later. He then joined the staff of The Institution of Engineering Designers with responsibility for Continuing Professional Development. In 1998, John was appointed as Associate Lecturer at The Open University in the field of Professional and Career Development in Engineering. In 2005, the author retired but continued to work for the OU in a consultancy capacity. John has always had an interest in history and hobbies, which now include writing, walking and photography. The author is married to Shireen and has one daughter, two granddaughters and a dog.
