This accomplished first novel by Sheila Morgan is set in a South Wales mining village during the Second World War. Ivy Edwards and her family relocate from a modern council house near the sea to a shabby terrace in Crymceynon to escape wartime bombing. With the support of relatives and colorful local characters, the family attempt to cope with their change of environment and the many emotional challenges which are thrown at them. The author recreates the spirit and mood of the times in convincing fashion, allowing readers to appreciate the dramatic changes which Welsh society and day-to-day family life have since undergone.
