Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Leichte Risse. Chosen as one of Living Dice's 2009 top gifts for wargamers, this eye-opening study by Konstantin Nossov delves into the captivating world of gladiators in ancient Rome. It offers a detailed and engaging exploration of gladiatorial life, covering everything from their equipment to their cultural significance. Initially, gladiatorial games began in the 4th century BC as solemn funeral rites for high-born citizens. Over the centuries, they evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry, heavily regulated by the government and embraced by Roman leaders. Nossov highlights how new events, including animal combat and naval battles, were integrated into the games.Drawing on updated research previously unavailable in English, Nossov's insights into the social status and daily lives of gladiators challenge common misconceptions. Contrary to the belief that they were mere expendables, many gladiators were highly-trained volunteers who earned substantial salaries, often hundreds of times greater than an average citizen. Slaves could achieve freedom with as few as four victories. These athletes lived communally and trained year-round for seasonal events, paralleling the lives of modern professional athletes. With renewed interest in gladiators sparked by popular media, Nossov's comprehensive examination of this enduring phenomenon promises to enlighten and engage readers.
