In August 1964 The Kinks released their third single. After a little noticed debut and a follow-up that had failed to chart at all, Pye Records were threatening to annul the group’s contract. But with its unforgettable distorted guitar riff, 'You Really Got Me’ went on to reach No.1, entering the US Top Ten later the same year. Followed by a string of hits, it marked the breakthrough of one of Britain’s most innovative and influential bands, and a turning point in the fortunes of two brothers whose troubled story is as tumultuous and characterful as the music they produced: Ray and Dave Davies.

Review:

'A fond yet revealing portrait of a Brit-pop institution.'

'The most in-depth account of the Kinks - the story laid bare in God Save the Kinks is one of the greatest in British pop history.'

'An excellent book on the band. It was amusing to see so many people spilling the beans after all this time.'

'A lively account of the Ray Davies-fronted group's life and times with a good eye for the many incidents of wilfulness and self-sabotage that stopped the band being quite as appreciated as they deserved.'

'A tragicomic epic of triumph and dysfunction, this is a highly readable account of a unique career. Although a self-confessed worshipper, Jovanovic never fawns over his subject, writing instead with a clear eye for detail and context ... it's a fine retelling of a very British legend.'

'A fond yet revealing portrait of a Brit-pop institution.'

**** `Neatly spun. Virtually every page unfolds a story of booze, bad luck or a punch-up . the drama grows madder as the years pass.'
