Aspiring author, Richard Frances, arranges a series of talks to reading and writing groups at clubs and libraries across the county. His intention being to do what authors have done for decades - to raise awareness of his work as a writer of crime novels. The day after his talk at the Ridlington Golf Club the body of a woman who attended the reader's group meeting is found close to the clubhouse. A single blow with a club stolen from the clubhouse is the cause of death - and the only fingerprints found on the weapon are those of Richard Frances! When, at his next talk, a second violent death occurs of a man Frances is known to dislike the police regard him as their prime suspect. With no obvious connection between the victims and no apparent motive for their deaths Richard Frances has to use his writer's imagination and skills to solve the mystery.
