"Rabble-Rouser for Peace" is the first book to tell the full story of how a boy from South Africa's poverty-stricken black townships became one of the world's best-known religious figures, a moral icon to those who work for peace and justice everywhere. Published to coincide with his 75th birthday, "Rabble-Rouser for Peace" contains never before seen material, including details of secret files of the apartheid government, how the Nobel Peace Prize was actually won by Tutu, the truth about his relationship with F W de Klerk, as well as his criticisim of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Drawn from 30 years of the author's first-hand contact with Tutu, this is not only a vivid character study of a public figure with a unique capacity to communicate warmth, humour and compassion but also a rich account of his dynamic place in history. The story of Desmond Tutu's life tells a crucial part of South Africa's history and its movement towards peace, but it also follows the growth of one of the best loved and globally most recognised men of our time.

First working as a journalist in South Africa, and then as Tutu's Press Secretary, John Allen was invited to join the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as Director of Communications in 1995. Next he was aide to Tutu when the Archbishop taught in Atlanta for two years. Thus he has had a unique opportunity to observe his subject at first hand and is being given complete access to the Archbishop's personal and public files. He lives in South Africa.

Paperback. Zustand: Good. 496 pages. Inscription on front end page/inside cover, Text lightly tanned. To be a rabble-rouser for peace may seem to be a contradiction in terms. And yet it is the perfect description for Desmond Tutu, Nobel laureate and spiritual father of a democratic South Africa. Tutu understood that justice -- a genuine regard for human rights -- is the only real foundation for peace. And so he stir red up trouble, courageously engaging in heated face-to-face confrontations with South Africa's leaders; he stirred up trouble in the streets, leading peaceful demonstrations amid the barely controlled fury of police battalions; he stirred up trouble on the world stage, seeking international disinvestment in the aparth eid economy. Tutu has led one of the great lives of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, and to read his story in full is to be reminded of the power of one inspired man to change history. We know in retrospect that the ap artheid resistance movement was successful and that South Africa, though not wit hout its problems, today faces an infinitely brighter future than it might if it had not been for the efforts of Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela, and other leaders . But no such outcome was ever a certainty. Allen personally observed how T. Artikel-Nr. 6838s
