Después de ser abandonado por ambos padres, ella y sus dos hermanas se hizo bajo la tutela del California Sistema Judicial, entrando y saliendo de casas de acogida para la próximos 14 años. Con el tiempo, descubrió que podía y quería --- --- a escribir. Recibió su maestría en la poesía de la Universidad de Michigan en 1996, y desde entonces ha sido residente en Yaddo y el beneficiario de becas de la Fundación Nacional para la Arts.
